The Challenge
The University of Maryland was already delivering the kind of academic, research, and real-world impact that defines a top-tier public institution. But its reputation and rankings had not fully caught up. In a landscape where perception shapes everything from student interest to policymaker confidence to institutional standing, UMD needed to turn reality into recognition.

Wildly Original Move
Incremental messaging was not going to close a perception gap at this scale. UMD needed a bold, unifying platform that could express the university’s momentum with clarity and credibility across the audiences that influence reputation. We created Fearlessly Forward, a brand platform built to position UMD as a university defined by progress, discovery, and the drive to shape what’s next.

Results
Fearlessly Forward gave UMD a stronger, more cohesive story to tell, helping elevate perception, deepen engagement, and better align the university’s reputation with the impact it was already making. The result was meaningful momentum across rankings, media, and performance channels:
- UMD rose 20 spots in U.S. News & World Report rankings (now #44)
- Reputation strengthened among prospective students, helping shift perception and preference
- Paid search CTR exceeded benchmarks by 2×, signaling increased interest and intent
- Native placements performed 30% above benchmark
- Time on site from paid channels increased significantly, indicating deeper engagement
