  • Art Director

Art Directors are driven to craft innovative visual concepts – they are the people who critique TV ads, Washingtonian Ads, packaging design for any product under the sun, and the wrong use of a terrible typeface by a struggling brand. Moreover, all on the way to the office. They understand that consumers’ time is limited and platform constraints are always a concern, and they build out their concepts and design directions accordingly. Our Art Directors design content for a wide variety of users, while collaborating daily with copywriters and strategists and UX specialists and the whole rest of the crew. They understand and anticipate the needs and concerns of their team members so they can come up with kick-ass concepts and design systems that rise above those challenges. They are confident in their abilities and believe in the content they produce, and they can represent their perspective as well as those of the clients and target audiences in work sessions and review.

    Responsibilities

    • Concept and collaborate with creative team, including other art directors, interaction designers, copywriters, programmers, etc.
    • Art direct—that is, be able to design or direct visually compelling and engaging artwork for a variety of advertising/design needs including websites as well as print ads, social media graphics, banner ads, presentation decks, packaging, etc.
    • Be able to design or direct visuals for specific project needs in any number of styles or techniques.
    • Collaborate on all design work that is generated by team members and offer feedback when necessary.
    • Develop creative strategies that are forward-thinking and in-line with current media trends.
    • Ensure a high standard of visual execution across all media and campaigns.
    • Work with account managers and planners to ensure creative concepts, tactics, and design elements are on brand and strategically sound.
    • Push clients towards fresh, exciting ideas where appropriate and possible.
    • Work with producers to ensure creative work product is delivered on deadline and by agency and clients’ criteria.
    • Manage multiple projects, with the ability to switch from one to the other seamlessly.
    • Begin to meet with and present work to clients of all levels.
    • Begin to take an interest in nurturing junior talent.

    Skills

    • 3-7 years of design, art direction or similar experience in an agency or in-house setting.
    • Proven ability to design for a variety of audiences, brands, and industries. We want to know you can move from one client to the next without stumbling.
    • An appreciation for the relationship between visual and textual and technical elements. Art Direction does not exist in a vacuum, and unless your designs and the words are working together in the right medium, we are not producing work that meets (and rises above) our standards.
    • Strong organizational skills and the ability to meet strict deadlines, often while working independently. Our Art Directors can put their heads down and produce excellent work without a whole lot of supervision.
    • Have high attention to visual detail, accuracy, and consistency.
    • Ability to communicate with both internal teams and clients.
    • The confidence to explain and support your thinking, both internally and externally.
    • A flexible approach and willingness to adapt your ideas to the needs of clients.
    • The ability to perform under pressure and deliver high-quality work on tight deadlines.
    • Experience with concept creation across all media.
    • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in a related field.
